The Passion Translation 12in1 Collection Encounter the Heart of God Brian Simmons 9781424553495 Books Reviews

  • I absolutely love the Passion Translation! As a Bible college student pursuing a Masters in Biblical Studies, it's the perfect tool and it's so fun to read that I can't put it down. Divided into books, it makes it easier to read a whole book of the Bible ( for example, the whole book of Ephesians, or the whole book of Romans in one sitting) at one time so the reader can have a better understanding of the author's original intent. As expected with any new translation, there is some controversy and discussion over whether or not this is a paraphrase or an actual translation. Please do not form an opinion based on reviews from anyone on the Internet. I encourage you to download the free book of John from ThePassionTranslation.com and decide for yourself. I had my professor who has a PhD in Theology and Spiritual Formation from Princeton review it so that I could use it in class and he confirmed it as a translation. I love the footnote at the bottom of the pages that describe the cultural context as well as nuances of the original languages of Aramaic, Hebrew, or Greek accordingly. I truly feel this is the translation for "such a time as this" both appropriate for our generation and the current condition of the church.
  • In truth, my wife should be writing this review, because I got this for her. Just let me say this...she loves it. I also got her the single volume version to put it all in a common binding, and so she could carry it to church. But the pages in that version are very thin and don't lend themselves for being written on or highlighted (IMHO). So, she is reading and studying with this one and carrying the other to church. She has thoroughly enjoyed this presentation of the New Testament. I hope the plan is to do this same treatment for all the Old Testament.
  • I started with Matthew. There is a typo on the first page. Tamar's children were Perez and Zerah. Perez had Hezron. I could have overlooked that. Not everyone loves Bible genealogy. It was a mistake. (I do think it's important to care for the names of these people that have been carefully written for thousands of years though.) The footnote on the next page about the 42 generations between Abraham and Jesus is misleading. Check this in the book of I Chronicles. There were at least 42 generations. I read more, but for me, it felt watered down and awkward at times. It worries me that so many people love this version. I would encourage you to compare what you read to an NIV or ESV or KJV and look at these books as a commentary. Realize that this "translation" was written by one man, not a panel of theologians. If you love it and it has rekindled your love for God's Word, then a purpose has been accomplished. I would caution against using this for primary Bible study.
  • I love reading the Psalms and especially Proverbs in the Passion Translation. I am still trying to understand why you cannot purchase the entire Bible or at least the entire New Testament instead of individual Book. Nevertheless, I am enjoying it.
  • I was so thrilled to be able to buy the 12 volume set at a discounted price. I have been drawn to the Passion Translation, each time I hear it quoted. I am loving how it brings familiar scriptures into another dimension of understanding.
  • I love reading the Bible. Been studying it for years. I am not exaggerating when I say I probably have at least 30 Bibles of different translations. This is my favorite. All these people who say "it's not a true translation", just ignore them and get this Translation, you will NOT be sorry. Can't wait for more.
  • I gifted this set to my parents for Christmas to supplement their daily devotional time and they LOVE this set. When I visit with my dad he now always has new found knowledge of the Word and likes sharing about the root words he is learning about among other wonderful things. I couldn't be happier with this purchase!
  • What can I say? I LOVE The Passion Translation. I LOVE the footnotes. Brian Simmons writes with scholarly expertise but also with MUCH revelation.
