J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) renowned author of THE HOBBIT, THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE SILMARILLION, was an artist in pictures as well as in words. Though he often remarked that he had no talent for drawing, his art has charmed his readers and has been exhibited to large and appreciative audiences the world over. In fact, his talent was far more than he admitted, and his sense of design was natural and keen.
J.R.R. TOLKIEN ARTIST ILLUSTRATOR explores Tolkien's art at length, from his childhood paintings and drawings to his final sketches. At its heart are his illustrations for his books, especially his tales of Middle-earth. Also examined are the pictures Tolkien made for his children, his expressive calligraphy, his love of decoration, and his contributions to the typography and design of his books.
With 200 reproductions, many in full colour, this lavishly-produced book offers a perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to discover a largely unexplored aspect of J.R.R. Tolkien's character.

JRR Tolkien Artist and Illustrator Wayne G Hammond Christina Scull JRR Tolkien Books Reviews

  • I have purchased all the other books by these authors. They clearly love and respect JRR Tolkien and are thorough and painstaking in their scholarship. I have found however that this really is the only book that you need, because almost all of Tolkien's paintings and drawings by these authors are reproduced again in all of their later books. The benefit of this book for example as opposed to the later books is that in one famous drawing "The Trolls" by Tolkien, the authors also show side by side comparison with a drawing by Jennie Harbour,, a Hansel and Gretel illustration in the woods. I really like to see how Tolkien was inspired by images from other painters. It doesn't detract from Tolkien's vision, it only makes it better as you can appreciate what really made Tolkien's imagination peculate.
Related, I might add something more. "The Art of The Lord of the Rings" by the same authors is really misnamed, because it really is more maps than art. Just a word of caution.
  • Oh, I'm just so happy this book exists! I've always been charmed by the great writer's artwork and here it is collected in chronological order and complete with fascinating insights. A perfect coffee table book for any Tolkien fan and worth reading from cover to cover.
  • A biography through pictures, this superlative text offers stunningly close analyses of illustrations from throughout Tolkien's life - many of which can only been seen here - and is a must-own resource for serious Tolkien fans.
  • J.R.R. Tolkien was a great author (millions of readers can attest to that). His talents, however, weren't confined to the written word. Professor Tolkien was also a proficient artist and illustrator. His illustrations graced the cover of each book of the "Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) trilogy (paperback) in the early 80s -- when I first read the series. I was unaware at the time that the the covers were reproductions of the author's handiwork. The art enhanced my LOTR 'experience' (for me, an '80s teen, Tolkien's books were portals to alternate realities and were not simply good reads). "J.R.R. Tolkien Artist and Illustrator" does, of course, present the expected, and I daresay obligatory, snapshots of Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth. However, it isn't limited to the vast expanse of that realm. The book also provides insights into what inspired many of his other artistic endeavors and shows many of the fruits of that inspiration. Truth be told, I purchased this book primarily for the eye candy. The commentary is an added bonus -- like a colorful eye candy wrapper imprinted with ingredients. If you like Tolkien, art and escapism, this book is for you.
  • This book is much better than I thought it would be. Mostly I was curious to see more of Tolkien's art, but the text that goes along with it is wonderful. Christopher Tolkien asked the authors to write this book to showcase his father's art, and they do a wonderful job of describing the pictures, pointing out details that I missed, and putting them in context of when and where and why Tolkien drew them. Several versions of the same pictures are shown so you can see how Tolkien worked through a problem until he found the best final product. Plus the inspirations for some of the pictures are also shown, to show that Tolkien copied others sometimes, but in the end put his own mark on it. By copied, I don't mean plagarized. He drew his eagle from a book of birds to make sure he got it right, or was inspired by other artists particular works. Highly recommended if you are a Tolkien fan. If you are just into art and not a Tolkien fan, then I don't think this will interest you.
  • Tolkien is best known for his writing, his world of Middle-earth, and some obscure translations of ancient texts.

    He did art too.

    Really?

YES! AWESOME ART! While he never trained professionally as an artist, it ran like a quiet river through his life. Here are collected wonderful watercolors, ink sketches, landscapes, places that no longer exist, places (Middle-earth) that only existed in Tolkien's fervent imagination, and other goodies. Not to be missed by any fan of the Professor's work.
  • Beautiful book at an affordable price. I highly recommend it to all Tolkien fans out there.
  • I have been amazed at the detail that Tolkien would put into his artwork ever since looking through the book of letters from Father Christmas that he did for the children living in his neighborhood. It was amazing to be able to see this collection of his artwork -- I had wanted to get a copy of the original one after learning that the newer edition is not as detailed as this one, so am very happy to have my own copy now.
