Never Fear Anything My Untold Story As A Sniper In Our Nations Longest War Robert Terkla Nicholas Irving Books Reviews

  • Let's be perfectly honest here.
This book, and I use that term loosely because it's actually closer to a pamphlet in size, is just ok and pretty poorly edited.
The stories, which I wanted to like so much because I love listening to Rob talk about his military service and everyday life on his YouTube channel, are very disjointed and lack any cohesion at all.
They seem to jump all over the place and just about the time you feel like the story is getting to it's climax, it just end and moves off to another which takes place some indeterminate amount of time later.
As another reviewer stated, the one story that does seem to draw you in, the story of his discharge, just begins to feel like some insight into what he is feeling, and how he is reacting, and just as you start to connect and wonder how he dealt with everything, it abruptly ends. Like some one started showing you the first ten minutes of a really good movie and then bam, turned it off and said good bye.

Overall I would have given this three stars, but had to take away a star simply because there are so many grammatical and spelling errors in the book. Now I don't mean grammatical as in the people didn't use proper grammar, I mean as in it looks like a lot of copying and pasting was done and no one went back to make sure they removed the previous portion completely.
Overall I wish that a real editor had been involved in this project because I think that with a little more effort and some better editing, the stories Rob presents would have been amazing to hear and allowed us to see into the life of a modem American serviceman, both while deployed and also while facing the much more difficult transition to everyday life.

Side note, I've found that many of the reviews giving this book five stars are from people who haven't yet read the book and are fans of his YouTube channel.
I find this disingenuous and as someone who had followed Rob on his channel for quite a while, I would hope these people would write serious reviews for products and not just use the review space as a cheering section.

Personally to Rob I'd like to say thank you from a fellow veteran for your service and do is all a favor and rewrite this book with more of the passion I see in your YouTube videos so we can truly hear your amazing stories.
  • Rob's stories here are just the tip of the iceberg of what a deployed soldier deals with in and out of combat. Like real life, this book is all over the place. This is both good and bad. You get a sense of what he was like and the difficulty he faced when the reality of being forced to do something he really didn't want to do, leave the Army. His reaction and emotion is something any veteran can relate to. Be sure to check out Mr. Terkla on his You Tube channel Lunkerstv. He shares his story and the stories of other veterans there as well. Thank you Rob for putting words to paper and sharing this with us.
  • I pre-ordered this book after becoming a fan of Terkla's YouTube channel. I have had it for almost an entire day now and am halfway through it. The writing style is great and easy to read. The pace is good. I wish it were longer, because I really dont want to put it down. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Thanks for your YT channel.
  • I am a huge fan of Rob and his You Tube channel. So when he came out with a book, I snatched it up. I'm sorry dude, but this is disjointed to the point of being jarring. Each section is like the action bits of the story, with none of the information leading up to that point, or any follow-through as to the result. It pops you suddenly into Rob's discharge, but doesn't say anything about the injury occurring or what lead up to it. Lastly, this book needs a thorough edit and proofreading. The spelling and grammar errors were distracting.
  • Rob, I love you bro.. but this was not a good book.

The stories in the book seem very disconnected and I'm not sure of the timeline and how they all tie together. There seems to not be any thread that binds them together into any narrative.

The book ends on a massive life change and provides no resolution. It's like a cliffhanger to a show you know won't get renewed for a second season. If it would have included the time after, how you and your family coped, how you moved to civilian life and YouTube, ect... I feel that the story would have been much better.

Lastly, my e-book text showed massive signs of near non-existent proofreading. There were many cases where letters were left out of words. Sentence fragments seemed to be headers for new sections of the book. It just seemed very much slapped together.

Brother, I agonized over if I should post this review. I finally came to the decision that I'd want to know if it were my book, so there it is. I love what you do on YouTube and your overall attitude you show us about life.
  • I received my pre-order today of Never Fear Anything and finished it in a little over an hour. It was good to hear some extra detail on Rob's military experiences but I feel like the book could've been so much better. It reads like it was written very quickly and lacks any sort of cohesion.

The few stories seem to be out of order, presented in a sort of shotgun fashion without any segue or glue from one story to the next. I really think that given some extra time, a bit more content, and a good editor that this could've been a solid read.

For some reason, the story that seemed the most real and raw was Rob talking about his medical discharge from the Army and battling over how to break the news to his wife. It was like the book was finally catching its stride and I was getting a window into the author's life only for it to abruptly end as if a door had been mistakenly left open and then slammed shut. This was a welcome shift to the style of the other stories in the book which seem to be presented flatly.

Thank you to the author for his service to our country and for the content he produces on YouTube. I look forward to seeing a revised version of this book at least with the errata corrected; my copy also had a cover issue where the letter "i" from the word "in" was missing.
